FAQ
What is Korean Air's Insider Stories?
Insider Stories is a documentary series that records Korean Air's rebranding through interviews with its executives and partners. It covers the new corporate identity, cabin experience, in-flight meal, livery and lounges, and was planned and produced by greatminds. This first episode is about the new CI.
Why did Korean Air change its corporate identity?
It is the first change in 41 years, since 1984. In the film Korean Air explains that it needed a new vision and mission for the next 50 years, and a renewed CI to go with it. The new CI marks the beginning of a unified Korean Air and the welcoming of a new family.
Who designed Korean Air's new CI?
Brand consultancy Lippincott. Korean Air ran a bidding and evaluation process among several global firms and chose Lippincott for its aviation expertise and a design philosophy that fit. Lippincott's Dan Vasconcelos (Creative Director) and Jan Van Wezemael and Coco Han (Design Directors) appear in the film.
What inspired the new Taegeuk mark?
The flowing ribbons of Sangmo-nori, a Korean folk performance. Lippincott drew hundreds of versions of the Taegeuk and kept the one that removed everything but the core movement, showing both energy and elegance.
Why did Korean Air keep its sky-blue fuselage?
According to the film, Chairman Cho Won Tae saw the sky blue on the upper fuselage as a heritage the company should keep. Korean Air kept the colour and the full-fuselage paint approach, and developed a custom aircraft paint, a metallic blue, for a more modern and premium look.
How was Korean Air's new typeface made?
The whole type family was developed with type foundry Dalton Maag, reflecting details of the Taegeuk design, while Lippincott's Coco Han led the Hangul. With Korean Air supporting 13 languages, it took a long time to complete. The Hangul font name shown on screen is 'Hanjin Group Sans KR'.
Who made the Insider Stories CI episode?
greatminds handled everything from documentary planning to overseas filming and post-production. Filmed in Seoul and Hong Kong.

- Dan Vasconcelos
If you think about Korean Air, it's been around for 55 years.
- Dan Vasconcelos
It is an airline that is respected and it's renowned for its operational efficiency, safety, everything that you associate with solid airlines.
- Dan Vasconcelos
But it was in a process of transformation.
- Cho Won Tae
Our CI was designed over 40 years ago and became a symbol recognized worldwide.
- Cho Won Tae
For many, travel means thinking of Korean Air's Taegeuk mark, a symbol of trust. Many have cherished this mark for years.
- Cho Won Tae
As we look ahead to the next 50 years, we needed a new vision and mission to guide us, along with a renewed CI.
- Cho Won Tae
The new CI keeps the Taegeuk while embracing a simpler, more modern design.
- Woo Keehong
Our new CI marks the beginning of a unified Korean Air.
- Woo Keehong
It also symbolizes welcoming a new family. We hope it brings people closer and paves the way for a brighter future.
- Kenneth Chang
We conducted an aggressive and very tight process of bidding and evaluations, and we had many potential global partners to work with.
- Kenneth Chang
We identified Lippincott as the one that could work most intimately with us because of their proven track in the airline industry, also their design philosophy.
- Dan Vasconcelos
Korean Air came to Lippincott with a task which was to modernize an absolutely accomplished but also iconic airline.
- Dan Vasconcelos
This wasn't a job of reinvention, but you have to signal that something has changed.
- Dan Vasconcelos
And that was the job that we had at hand.
- Kenneth Chang
So this new CI and this new logo represents modernization, still elegance, a bit of looking forward, saying simplification.
- Kenneth Chang
And also to bring a story that we're changing, but do not forget where we started from.
- Dan Vasconcelos
So we start with the Taegeuk.
- Dan Vasconcelos
The way we made the Taegeuk unique and much more sophisticated was actually to subtract.
- Dan Vasconcelos
One of the things that we noticed was that there was a very beautiful motion running inside on the outskirt of the Taegeuk.
- Dan Vasconcelos
We were very inspired by Korean folkloric tradition called Sangmo-nori.
- Dan Vasconcelos
The performers, they wear costumes that have beautiful elongated colorful ribbons.
- Dan Vasconcelos
What if these ribbons actually inform that shape of the Taegeuk?
- Dan Vasconcelos
What if we actually take that movement and that elegance and that energy?
- Dan Vasconcelos
We explored hundreds of Taegeuks, I should say, but that came out as a winner, which was to take away elements, take away visual congestion to just retain the essential movement.
- Dan Vasconcelos
And the essential energy and elegance of that, and that's what led to the final solution.
- Kenneth Chang
I think Korean Air was famous for was the color of the livery.
- Kenneth Chang
So we want to make sure that presence was maintained, but we want to take an uplift to the next level.
- Dan Vasconcelos
Mr. Cho feels that the blue top is part of the heritage of the company and we need to find a way of retaining it.
- Dan Vasconcelos
That was a little bit of a eureka moment because it was about keeping that blue, keeping that full-colored fuselage, but then projecting into the future.
- Dan Vasconcelos
One of the things that we did was to then develop a bespoke aviation paint which is metallic, and that retains the blue, but it does that in a very modern, in a very bold way, but also in a very premium way because that's the pivot that Korean Air is taking.
- Dan Vasconcelos
There was a job for the visual system to do, which was to create cohesion in the experience.
- Jan Van Wezemael
So we designed the font to strongly link back to the Taegeuk and its tapered details.
- Jan Van Wezemael
We worked with Dalton Maag to flesh out the whole font, the European set of the font, but also Hangul, which Coco helped to direct.
- Coco Han
Korean is very tricky because for Hangul, you combine those letters together.
- Coco Han
So we focused a lot on finding the right balance at going the just the right amount of the calligraphic style.
- Kenneth Chang
In Korean Air, we support almost 13 languages, so it took a long time, but I wanted to make sure it was simple enough but unique enough that represents Korea.
- Dan Vasconcelos
I hope the global audiences will want to experience it.
- Dan Vasconcelos
I wonder if they will look at it and say, well, this feels like a fantastic airline.
- Kenneth Chang
Our CI change, not only expose the change that we're doing, but it will also expose the internal changes that we're making with employees.
- Woo Keehong
This brand renewal has been a long time coming.
- Woo Keehong
Through this renewal, Korean Air has returned to our roots, embracing our shared Vision of providing "safer and more comfortable journeys."
- Cho Won Tae
Becoming the world's most beloved airline is the path we must take as a global leader in aviation.
- Cho Won Tae
With your trust and support, we'll soar to new heights for a better tomorrow.
